Where I got the name Tananda or:

Tananda Densmore's MYTH Page

Well, SOMEBODY had to do it.

In all my searching, I have really not seen very many (okay, any) pages devoted to Robert Asprin and more specifically his MYTH series. As they say, if you want something done, do it yourself.

When I was searching for a name to use in the SCA, one name stuck out. So much so that it isn't matter whether or not I could ever find historical reference to it anywhere. Tananda (Tanda for short) was an assassin, and generally as mischievous as she was deadly. As it turns out, The author, Robert Aspirin was one of the original members of the SCA, and even helped found the Dark Horde. If I ever meet up with him, I want to ask just one question:

"Did you find the name Tananda in a historical reference somewhere, (and if so, where) or did you pull it out of your butt?"

Maybe someday, I will run into him at a sci-fi convention.

(NOTE: I found out through a friend that Tananda's name started out at Tanda because it sppelled "T and A. Apparently, it was a bad pun about every story needing a little T and A  hence Tanda and later Tananda.)

Anyway, Here's the MYTH and Robert Asprin stuff

Summaries of the MYTH Books

Book 1 - Another Fine MYTH (1978)

Summary (From back of Ace Books fourth printing)

Skeeve was a magician's apprentice, until an assassin hired by an ancient enemy struck and his master was dead. Skeeve suddenly found himself alone with Aahz, a purple-tongued demon the old magician had summoned from another dimension as a practical joke just before he was killed.

Aahz had just lost his powers. Skeeve had just lost his job. So together, they set out through a universe populated by Deveels (or devils), Imps, dragons, unicorns and more, looking for a way to get even...

Quote (from Ace Books fourth printing)

Walking around the Bazaar in Deva, Skeeve suddenly became aware of the most repulsive odor he had ever smelled. Instead of avoiding it, Aahz followed it until the two were standing in front of a dome-shaped tent.

"that," Aahz said, "is the smell of Pervish cooking."

Skeeve asked the demon whether he could go in the tent with him. "I'm not all that weak-stomached, you know," he said.

"Well, I'll tell ya kid," Aahz answered. "The main problem with Pervish food is keeping the goo from crawling out of the bowl while you're eating it..."

Book 2 - MYTH Conceptions (1980)

Summary (From back of Ace 1985 edition)

A demon who had lost his powers, Aahz still managed to keep his apprentice, Skeeve, out of most kinds of trouble. Then Skeeve was summoned to the court of Roderick the Fifth of Possiltum to audition for the position of Court Magician. Unfortunately for everyone, he got the job.

Quote (from Ace 1985 edition)

"Hightail it outta here, kid," my mentor ordered. "I'll try to keep the dragon busy."

An image flashed in my mind. It was a a view of me, Skeeve, court magician, bolting for safety while Aahz faced the dragon alone. Something Snapped in my mind.

"You go!"

"Kid, are you - "

"It's my war and my job," I shouted. "Now get going."

With that I turned to face the oncoming dragon, not knowing or caring if Aahz followed my orders. I was Skeeve!
