The Drinks of Pennsic and the Swamp

Inventing new drinks (or giving new and evil names to old drinks) is an art form for us Swampies. If the SCA recognized it as an official art, Inebria Maximus (Lleian) would surely be Laureled for it. Many clans have their own special drink which often accompanies their signature party. (Creeping death for the Sloths, Swamp gas for Pentwyrven, etc...)

Here now is a list of the knowne drinks of the Swamp... Ingredients are listed where possible. (Though this is not common as these drinks are often proprietary, and their contents are secret.) Fore every drink, there is a story... If you have a story about one of these, or decide that I have forgotten to include one, please e-mail me.

Swamp Gas - The traditional drink of Pentwyrven. it consists of Mountain Dew, Everclear, glow sticks (whole sticks, not broken - that would be dangerous) and dry ice (in the serving vessel) it is fairly strong, and the alcohol seems to get to one's head rather fast.

Plunch - A traditional drink of Clan of the Northern Lynx. Invented by Katnip. it is technically called Katnip's Plunch. The story behind Plunch is as follows:

Green Dragon - This evil concoction's origins lie shrouded in the mists of time (and the haze of alcohol induced coma) basically, it is 50% Creme De Menthe and 50% Everclear (190proof grain alcohol) it bites like it's namesake. For some reason Lil Kender seems to love the bloody stuff and gets endless hours of amusement from walking around and handing out samples. Her own personal tolerance for the green mixture of doom borders on the astounding. Drink this at your own peril.

Peppermint dragon - Okay, so take Green Dragon and add a liberal amount of Godiva chocolate liquor. Well, at least it cuts the Everclear a bit - warning for strong constitutions only!!! (another masterpiece brought to you by the woman-of-iron-stomach- herself: Lil Kender.

Adder Venom - It's like a Flaming Moe... that doesn't flame.

Lleian's drinks - There are many here, and Lleian is very possessive about the recipes. Actually, she keeps them in her head, and I couldn't manage to remove that part to examine the contents. I can at least enumerate them, and give a brief description.

Drinks she helped invent

Creeping Death - The signature drink of Clan Thoran Sloth. Every war, they hold the Creeping death party. I have no idea what's in it, but it is black and sweet, and just plain EVIL!!!

Shaka's Pleasure - Shaka's personal drink. He was standing at a table out in front of Rogues at Swamp Fest, handing it out. I don't even remember what it tasted like, (I was a bit drunk at the time) but I know I liked it... and so did those from Bergental Brave enough to try it.

Greger's drink - Tropikana Twister and Ammeretto. Very good stuff, and one of my personal favorites. It is fairly low in alcohol content, and can be sipped all day long without any major effects.

Hula and Hula Plus - Hula is just a nice name for Boone's Wild Island. This is a sparkling pear wine that is sweet and low in alcohol. If you have some at Pennsic, you can make grown men do the Hula for a taste... just don't tell them what it is. Hula Plus is Hula with Everclear added to give it a kick. I invented this myself, and it was a hit.

Slack in a bottle - Another one that I invented. it is Hula Plus with Sloe Gin and Gatorade. I called it Slack in a Bottle because it is the perfect drink for those who wish to slack... you drink it, and the alcohol gets you nice and drunk... the sugar helps to encourage a hangover, and the Gatorade replaces the electrolytes that the alcohol killed, thus curing your hangover. ALL IN ONE DRINK.

Pan Juice - The Lost Boys' own this one. Made from Green Lollipops, Sunshine, and a Little bit of Hell. The Lost Boys make this one often , and usually in vast quantities. It is traditional for them to have a Roving Pan Party every war. They make a HUGE vat of the stuff, and place it on a little red wagon. They then haul the wagon all over the swamp, distributing it to all whom they approach. This is always a VERY popular party! At Pennsic XXVI, I traveled with them and the Roving Pan, and can testify to the fact that it very nearly emptied the Rogues Versus the Beer for at least 10 minutes!
